Born and reared in Black Mountain, North Carolina, the author is descended from Native Americans. In the 1830s, his family lived on what is now the Cherokee Indian Reservation. A retired accountant, he was educated at the University of North Carolina-Asheville and Western Carolina University. He is a member of the Masons, Sons of Confederate Veterans, and MENSA.
