vike: An Autobiographical Story Set in Budapest and the Banat at the Twilight of the Austro-Hungarian Empire
by Anne Bruder and edited by Adrian Bruder-Juttner

During September of 2004, I found my mothers fifty-year-old manuscript, which had been sleeping in the attic for fifteen years, had never been read. The manuscript brought about a new focus on old pictures Ive seen since her death in 1966.

The story is autobiographical and about lovenot just romantic love, but true soulmates, in the sense of Tom Sawyer and Becky Thatcher.

About the Author

Anne Bruder married the American engineering professor she met on the boat and moved in Columbus, Ohio, in 1930. They were divorced three months later. She enrolled at Ohio State University and was active in the International Club and Drama organizations. She got her B.A. and moved to Cleveland in 1934.

By 1940 she received an M.A. from Western Reserve University and married my father, Stephen Juttner, a native of Yugoslavia. I was the only child born in Cleveland, in 1946. The family moved to St. Louis in 1952, where she wrote the novel five years later. Within nine years, on April 20, 1966, Anne Bruder passed away quietly in her sleep of an apparent heart attack. She left us without report. She rejoined her beloved Laci. Though more than forty years have passed, I still think of her in quiet moments. Finding the book and being able to edit this work has been a mitzvah, a blessing for me.
