Charlie and the Big Mistake
by Linda Redding This story is based on a true experience I had with my cockatiel purchased as a hand-fed baby from Bird Haven, a local establishment that raises their own birds. I bought Charlie because our cocktatiel, Bird, went to Heaven after nineteen years, and my family missed him so. Charlie was so young at purchase that no one was sure of its gender. Our vet guessed Charlie was a male, so based on this, we decided to accept her decision. My story unfolds. My preschoolers loved the story and had so many questions after they were allowed to examine the eggs. I was thrilled. Why doesnt Charlie have babies? Why doesnt Charlie know not to fly into windows or walls? Why doesnt Charlie know the dangers in his world? What would happen to Charlie if he flew outside? Charlie taught my preschoolers and many adults who read his story about birds and me, too! ABOUT THE AUTHOR I grew up on Long Island. My early years were spent in Bayside, where I went to school until the middle of fifth grade. My parents bought a home in Manhasset, and we all moved to a wonderful town. Upon graduation, I attended Michigan State University for two years, majoring in business education. I decided to transfer to Katherine Gibbs in New York City for a two-year course for college women. I worked for a small plywood and flooring establishment for about six months and then married my high school sweetheart. We have two children, David and Karen. When Karen was in kindergarten, I was hired as a paraprofessional at Karen and Davids school. I worked there for five years and loved it so much that I went back to college. I earned my B.S. in elementary education with an endorsement in English. I taught school for nine years (K, 6th, 7th, and 8th grades). Besides Charlie and the Big Mistake, I am also the author of The Best Dog in the World Lives Here, Rufus and the Big Makeover, and James and the Wonderful Wish.
