Derby is the coming-of-age book of the sixties, when mindless pleasure and idealism collide with the reality of war and just plain bad luck.

Mac and Weber, two losers at serious college achievement who could never imagine the goal of higher education is to graduate and get a job, impulsively take their libidos and hedonism on the road and hitchhike to the Kentucky Derby. Their minds filled with fantasies of nonstop gratification and untold riches from racing winnings, they confront the unplanned and unpredictable affairs of raw life. For Mac, the first-person narrator of the tale, the result is a heavy dose of sudden maturity. By the end of the book, the boy inside him has died, but the man has not yet emerged. Only the basic building blocks are there, yet to be assembled.

About the Author

John K. McHenry is an attorney who lives with his wife, Candace, on their twenty-acre farm in southern Ohio. He also keeps his license active in his first career of psychologist. He has missed four Kentucky Derbys since 1966.
