___________________________________________________________From the Back of the Hearse: A Compilation of True Short Stories
by J.D. Holman
So here I am, sitting on a cold tile floor in an embalming room, leaning against the wall with a dead naked lady in my lap and laughing until tears come to my eyes.
Death is not a respecter of persons or age. Through illness, disease, homicide, suicide, or accident, it takes the young, old, rich, and poor. Sometimes itís horrible, sometimes sad, sometimes unnecessary, and sometimes a blessing. Sometimes it is even humorous.
It is not written to be disrespectful but to show that even in times of sadness and despair, there can be a lighter side to death.
About the Author
I was raised in Toppenish, Washington. At an early age, I found a dead baby in a suitcase in an alley in a garbage can. That experience may have sealed my fate of becoming a mortician.
Following three years in the military, I attended the California College of Mortuary Science in Los Angeles, California. I retired after forty years in the profession. Having participated in over ten thousand funerals in California, Utah, and Idaho, I have seen nearly every aspect of death. Also, for several years, I worked in the ambulance service because in the early years, many funeral homes also provided that service.
