Girls Crying
by Pauline J. Roberts Responsibility was a household chore for me. I knew what responsibility was before I knew what it meant. At the ripe old age of six, I began to accompany my mother to the field where the cows were and watch them eat. We would sit and watch them eat grass for hours until their bellies were bulging. At eight or nine, I began taking the cows to the field by myself. Sometimes the baby calf would go to sleep, rest, or hide from the hot sun and get lost. When it was time to go home and the calf was not beside his mother, the mother would call out with a loud moo. If the calf did not respond, the mother would briskly walk home crying moo, moo, moo. I began to cry, too, when I began looking and couldnt find the calf. I couldnt go home without the entire herd, so I would then call on fellow cattle keepers to help me search for the calf.
