Intimate Voices
by Pierre Carpentier

I decided I wanted to name my book of poetry Intimate Voices. My pieces are diverse in subject matter. It wasnt easy to come up with a title. I figured the one I chose was most appropriate.

I have enjoyed being a voice for people like Miss Violet, showing my respect and compassion for those like Juanita, while paying tribute to someone like Mathew Shepherd. With poetry, you can take a position and stand your ground. Thus I became a voice.

I hope people appreciate Intimate Voices. I have grown as a poet simply by writing this book. Imagery is a skill that I have sharpened, evident in such poems as Beach High, Boulder Ridge, Witness, and Visual.

About the Author

I was born in Glens Falls, New York, the youngest of seven children. I was raised outside the city in a town called Ganesvoort. My mom was a single mother and my father was a drifter. Although I was already seven years old when I first met my dad, he stuck around.

In 1976 we traveled south and learned firsthand what migrant farming labor was all about. Most of us would skip school to bring in that twelve dollars a day. Wed pool our money to buy food and pay bills.

My mother was killed in a car accident when I was thirteen. The next few years of my life would be under the foster care system. My dad could not take care of us. He knew it, and so did we.

I went through a number of homes. My desire was to be on my own. Thus I became emancipated at seventeen.

I finished my senior year and graduated from high school in 1985. I went on to college and earned a two-year degree in human services. I have worked with disabled adults for eighteen years, bought a two-family home, and enjoy writing poetry.
