by Robert R. Mehling

In Mea Saurus: An Artist’s Confessions
, Robert R. Mehling discusses his life in terms of his religious beliefs. Recently shaken by the death of his mother, he takes this opportunity to make a long-overdue confession and return to the Catholic Church, “just in case it’s not all bull — and Mom’s in heaven.”

He ruminates on the facts of life, death, Church doctrine, and the teachings of Aleister Crowley. Mehling also paints a picture of growing up in America during the counterculture years of the sixties and seventies. His thoughts and personal experiences are related with humor and poignancy.

Artist Robert R. Mehling is primarily known for his highly illusionistic still-life paintings. His professional art career began in the seventies, when his work was inspired by surrealism. Lucid and contemplative, Mehling’s recent paintings emphasize the autonomous object over concept. His work hangs in many private and public collections. He has exhibited at the Salmagundi Club, NYC, the Parrish Art Museum in Southampton, and numerous galleries.

Also a prolific writer, Mehling has been recognized by “Who’s Who in America” for his contribution to American art. He lives, paints, and teaches on Long Island.
