She writes about everything that has ever crossed her mind and puts them together in her poetry, and growing up in the inner city, there are many stories to be told. Sometimes the endings are happy but not always. She takes some of the plights from life both good and bad and inserts characters created in her imagination to reveal a life all too real. In this edition, she shares her poetry with you. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Born Marilyn Elizabeth Patton in 1957, Ms. Garcia has been a poet for over thirty years and in 2005 and 2003 she received the Editors Choice Award for outstanding achievement in poetry. Her poem Life was published in the anthology The Colors of Life, in 2004 by the Library of Congress. Ms. Garcia grew up in the Louis H. Pink Housing Projects in Brooklyn, New York. Her family relocated to Long Island Queens in the early 1970s. In the late 1980s, she moved to upstate New York. Divorced, she has raised her daughter, Mercedes, as a single parent. A 2001 graduate of Minority Womens Business Enterprises, she received the Mayors Award in recognition for Mercedes Clothing & Accessories, The Clothing Store on Wheels, which she started in upstate New York in April 2001.
