by Helen Joyce and Regina Dionne

A Rage in Chicago is the story of Sophia Lowell, a young black woman who is attractive, intelligent, highly principled, and strives for excellence in whatever she undertakes. At twenty-five she pursues her dream of getting a PhD at Laramie University’s prestigious Monica Blake School of Social Work. But in the rarefied atmosphere of academia her idealistic expectations turn to disillusionment when she experiences the mind games, sexism, and racism of some professors. She soon learns that dissertation committees have absolute power and can be compared to the ancient Greek gods who delighted in jerking hapless mortals around and putting obstacles in their way.
