by Joe Dowling

Life can be like a ballgame wherein we come to bat many times and must make decisions that will result in hits or outs. This story is a chronicle of a man growing up in Queens, New York, with baseball and pitching in Yankee Stadium as two of his main loves. It compares the game of baseball to the game of life following his trip through college, the baseball farm team, and in the Army during the Korean War. Along the way, both he and his sweetheart’s loves are challenged. Thus his life has its outs, errors, and home runs. The game is played with both laughter and tears.

The author was born and grew up in Queens, New York. He played baseball during those early days starting with the PAL, through college, and through the old Queens Alliance. He remained active in the Garden City South Little League on Long Island for over ten years. Joe holds a bachelor of arts degree and a master of science degree in chemistry from Adelphi University.

He was stationed at the DMZ zone in Korea for sixteen months in the Army while the final peace was being negotiated. He worked over forty years in the technical field of the sugar industry. Joe has written many technical papers and chapters on sweeteners, thus he has gained an awareness of the sweet things in life. Now retired, he is enjoying his grandkids and looking back on life in the forties and fifties.
