A Year in the (Infertility) Life

by Nikki Zurawski

About the Book

Infertility. It usually takes a year or more of “trying” to get pregnant to get to that word, and no one wants to hear it. Once the doctor says it out loud, life can change as you know it. Poking and prodding. Early morning appointments. Ovulation tracking. HSG dye tests. Ultrasounds. Expensive Consultations. Fertility drugs that you can’t even pronounce. Painful procedures. Fertility clinic referrals. Treatment cycles. Intrauterine insemination. Polypectomy. Too many follicles. Cysts. Injections. Hormone Support. Surgeries. Consultations on in-vitro fertilization. Even loss. That’s just the physical side of it. The emotional side? Trying to navigate rescheduling work meetings for last-minute appointments based on baseline data each cycle. Tough conversations with friends, family, and your boss. Deciding when to allow your body a “break” from treatment cycles, even if just to give your health savings account a chance to catch up. Overthinking. Sleepless nights. Worrying that in the end, none of it will work. Trying to find a way to stay sane in the midst of all of it while literally filling your body with hormones.

    Informative and inspiring

This is an excellent, informative, very engaging book shedding light on what the struggle of infertility can be like by sharing one couple’s journey. Nikki does a great job of taking a very serious and heavy topic and making it enjoyable to read about, and even humorous at times. The book is divided into several pretty short sections. Most of them narrate her and Robb’s month-by-month journey of trying to get pregnant and dealing with loss, while others just share her insights about certain related topics. Nikki’s delightful personality really comes out on the pages and she does of great job of drawing you in! She really makes you root for her and Robb’s dream and eager find out what will happen next. I was interested in this book NOT because of this being a personal struggle, but because I wanted to be more sensitive to friends and others I know who deal with infertility. It’s not a topic people talk about very much, so to someone not going through it, like me, you will be amazed at how complicated, uncertain, and just extremely difficult it can be. You also will learn things you may say or do that can be hurtful to people struggling to have a child so you can be aware and intentional about behaviors to avoid. For those who are currently experiencing the pain of infertility or who have already been through it, I believe they will really resonate with a lot the thoughts shared in this book, and hopefully they will find it helpful. Nikki emphasizes throughout the book that even with infertility, everyone’s journey is very different, but I do think people will still be able to relate in many ways. She does more than just share her story; she also offers lots of great information and advice. A Year in the (Infertility) Life is a great book to give hope and comfort to anyone who is having difficult time getting or staying pregnant, or even to anyone waiting on any unfulfilled life desire. Whether infertility is your struggle or not- you will connect with the Zurawkis’ journey, learn how to persevere in trials, and also learn how you can better support those around you. I highly recommend!
