By Ron Jevaltas
Why “Lampyridae?” The title is consistent with his scientific roots. An internet search revealed “firefly” to be associated with a host of things that had little to do with the insect. A lifetime of heating with wood and the necessity of fire with regard to his passion for “sugaring,” were instrumental in creating in him the “fire bug.”
Ron is a phenological poet. Often his poetry presents as journal entries that are sensitive to weather and climate and how those natural phenomena are connected to the living things to which he feels a remarkable kinship.
Some of his mentors, with regard to phenology, include Aldo Leopold, Henry David Thoreau, Rachel Carson, Seamus Henney, as well as Frost and Dickinson. These authors have helped forge in Ron, a “road less traveled” by today’s standards, and have given him a voice that often places him at odds with the contemporary fascination with electronic connectivity.
